I'm going to guess that's from about 1975. I remember listening to that song on an AM transistor radio.

You guess correctly! And that is the officially correct way to listen to it.

That, or on a 45. For those of us who remember these.

Heh heh. Played on a portable Singer turntable in my case.

I heard this song the other day on the radio. The thing I like about it is the way she sings it. It may seem like 70s pop fluff, but there’s some real musicality there. You can hear that as high as she gets in the register, she puts good air behind it and keeps her voice from getting too thin (or thinner than her voice is naturally anyway). And she doesn’t gasp for breaths at inappropriate spots like many pop artists you hear today but plans them according to the phrasing.

So yeah, I found myself really appreciating the song on a couple levels.

It sounds trite, but she didn’t get where she is because she can’t sing. She’s a hell of a talent. However, she’s not much of a dancer. A while ago, I watched the eminently forgettable Xanadu . There’s a scene where she dances with Gene Kelly. Now, Gene Kelly is, of course, one of the greatest dancers that ever cut a rug. But ONJ couldn’t keep up. Kelly’s was an amazing display of fluidity and grace, even though he was getting on in years.

Having said all those things about ONJ, I think we can also agree that Let’s Get Physical wasn’t exactly her best work, even if it was one of her more popular songs. The video is a hoot.

That video had me rolling. They did it the only way it could work. Yeah, she could dance well enough for something like Grease , but that was not her strong point.

1981, yo. I was there for the launch of MTV, and I remember how nobody really knew what to do with rock videos. It was a brand new thing, and looking back, so many of them were just so terrible.

Duran Duran knew what to do. I remember that much. That’s how they conquered the US.

And I remember when MTV started. My friends who lived in Carmel couldn't get it because the city thought it was bad for their young minds.

It’s bad for young minds now because it’s just so damned awful. Remember when they actually showed music videos? They also showed Blue Oyster Cult, Joan Armatrading, you know, real music. Aw hell, I’m old and I need another beer.

You mean the golden age when videos had production values? I think they still show those during bingo night down at the senior center. See ya there, old timer.

Production values, good melodies, lyrics that weren’t (overtly) about sex and drugs. No rap.

Your comment made me smile. Now get the hell off my lawn.
